The name Isla de Lobos has nothing to do with wolves: it comes from the lobos marinos, the monk seals (Monachus monachus) that populated these waters until the 15th century. Norman conquerors under Jean de Béthencourt slaughtered them from 1402 for skin and oil, and within decades the species vanished from the archipelago.
