North Shore Fuerteventura volcanic coast

Fuerteventura North Shore

The Fuerteventura North Shore is a coastal stretch of roughly 15 km between Corralejo and El Cotillo, famous worldwide among surfers and adventure travellers. The dirt road that runs along it, signposted "Camino de los Pescadores", crosses lunar landscapes of black lava, golden dunes and dramatic cliffs sculpted by Atlantic swells. There is no public transport here: a 4x4 (or at least a proper rental car driven carefully) is essential.

3. Getting There

  • Location: northern coast of Fuerteventura, between Corralejo and El Cotillo, Canary Islands, Spain.

  • By car: from Corralejo head west on the FV-10 for 5 km, then follow the unpaved track signposted "North Shore". From El Cotillo the same dirt road starts north-east of town.

  • By bus: no service. Tiadhe lines reach Corralejo (line 6) and El Cotillo (line 8) only.

  • By bike or hike: popular gravel cycling route, around 18 km between the two towns β€” carry 2 litres of water per person.

4. What to Expect

  • Feel: total silence, volcanic black rock under bare feet, salt spray and the roar of waves breaking on reefs.

  • Perfect for: experienced surfers, photographers chasing dramatic sunsets, 4x4 enthusiasts and anyone craving an off-the-grid coastal drive.

5. Cinema and History

The North Shore's surreal mix of black lava fields and white cliffs has been used in several film productions: shots of The Eternals and Allied were filmed along this coast, and many car commercials use these landscapes for their post-apocalyptic feel. Historically, the area was used by Majoreros to set corrales β€” coastal stone fish traps still visible at low tide near El Hierro point.

6. Top Surf Spots on the North Shore

  • El Hierro: long left-hander reef break for advanced surfers, works best on NW swell.

  • Generoso: heavy reef break, fast and hollow β€” one of the most respected waves in the Canaries.

  • Bubble (La Burbuja): shallow, sucky right-hander β€” expert surfers only.

  • Mejillones: sand-bottom beach break, gentler conditions, suitable for intermediate level.

  • Hierro Izquierda: the long, peeling left wave that made Fuerteventura famous in surf magazines in the 1990s.

7. Did you know…

The North Shore was "discovered" by international surfers in the late 1980s, when a small group of Australian and Californian travellers spotted the empty perfect waves while crossing the dirt road in a rented Volkswagen van. Within a few years Fuerteventura became one of the top European surf destinations β€” and the same dirt track has remained mostly unchanged ever since.

8. Quick Practical Tips

  • πŸ“… Best time: October to March for big swells; May to September for milder, learn-to-surf conditions.

  • 🧸 Pack light: reef booties (essential), wetsuit 3/2 mm in winter, leash, sunscreen, plenty of water.

  • πŸŒ€ Wind factor: early morning offshores are common, afternoon onshores almost daily β€” surf at dawn.

  • πŸ“‹ Facilities: none along the track. Closest food, fuel and toilets are in Corralejo or El Cotillo.

  • 🌍 Respect nature: never park or camp on dunes, take all rubbish back with you, give priority to local surfers in the line-up.
