North Shore Fuerteventura: Advanced Surf Spots and Volcanic Tracks
This is the deep-cut companion to our overview of Fuerteventura North Shore: a guide for surfers who already know their way around the line-up and for travellers who want to drive the full Camino de los Pescadores, from Punta Elena to Majanicho and beyond. The 15 km of volcanic coastline north of El Cotillo hold some of the most technical waves in the Atlantic, plus quiet picnic spots and panoramic viewpoints unknown to most tourists.
3. Getting There
-
Location: volcanic coast between Majanicho and El Cotillo, northern Fuerteventura, Canary Islands.
-
By 4x4: from Corralejo follow the FV-10 west for 5 km, turn right onto the unpaved track at Majanicho; the full traverse to El Cotillo takes 60-90 min driving slowly.
-
By rental car: only the eastern section to Majanicho is doable in a normal car. From Majanicho westwards a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is required.
-
By bike: gravel cycling route increasingly popular, 18 km total, no shade and no water on the way.

4. What to Expect
-
Feel: raw volcanic rock under bare feet, salt spray on the windshield, total silence between sets, occasional fishermen mending their nets.
-
Perfect for: advanced surfers chasing reef waves, drone photographers, 4x4 enthusiasts, geology lovers and anyone wanting to escape the Corralejo crowd.
5. Cinema and Heritage
The northern dirt road has been used by countless car commercials (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) thanks to its lunar look. Scenes from The Eternals and Allied were also filmed along this coast. Historically the local Majoreros built corrales โ coastal stone fish traps still visible at low tide between Majanicho and El Hierro point.
6. Advanced Surf Spots Detail
-
Generoso (Hierro Derecha): heavy, fast right-hander reef break, works on NW swell, very shallow on low tide โ experts only.
-
Bubble (La Burbuja): super-fast hollow right with a sucky take-off over reef. One of the most technical waves in the Canaries.
-
Suicides: the name says it all โ shallow reef right with no margin for error, paddle-out via the channel only.
-
Majanicho: gentler mixed sand/reef break, intermediate friendly when the swell is small.
-
El Hierro Izquierda: long peeling left wave, classic North Shore postcard spot.
7. Did you knowโฆ
Surfers nicknamed parts of this coast "the Canarian Pipeline" in the 1990s after a famous WCT contest held nearby. The wave shape, the reef texture and the offshore trade wind do recall the Hawaiian North Shore โ though on a smaller and slightly less consequential scale. Local surfers nicknamed Generoso "Cleopatra" because of its perfectly geometric peak.
8. Quick Practical Tips
-
๐ Best time: October to April for size and consistency; pump in September too.
-
๐งธ Pack light: reef booties mandatory, 3/2 mm wetsuit in winter, helmet recommended on Generoso/Bubble, leash 7 ft.
-
๐ Wind factor: early morning offshore is the gold-standard; afternoon onshore wrecks the line-up by 13:00.
-
๐ Facilities: none along the dirt track. Bring water, food and a first-aid kit. Closest pharmacy and fuel in El Cotillo or Corralejo.
-
๐ Respect locals: the North Shore line-up has very strong territorial dynamics. Wait your turn, never paddle inside, never burn locals on a set wave.
