Feria de Artesania Antigua Fuerteventura: Canary Crafts Fair
Held every year in late May at the historic arena of Antigua, the Feria gathers more than 250 artisans from Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Pottery, basketry, leather work, traditional embroidery, hand-woven palm hats, knife-making, soap-making and wood carving demonstrations turn the village into a living museum for three days. Folk music, traditional Canarian dances and the famous lucha canaria (Canary wrestling) round out the programme.

4. What to Expect
-

-
Perfect for: souvenir hunters looking for the real thing, photographers, food lovers, families with kids, anyone wanting a taste of authentic Canary culture.
5. Cultural Background
The fair was founded in the early 1990s to celebrate and preserve traditional Canarian craftsmanship, which had begun to fade with industrial mass-production. Today it is the largest gathering of its kind on Fuerteventura. Each artisan can demonstrate their craft live, sell directly to the public and exchange techniques with peers from other islands. The municipality of Antigua also offers prizes for the best traditional piece and the best youth project.
6. Programme Highlights
-
Friday evening: opening ceremony, official band, lighting of the village.
-
Saturday morning: craft demonstrations, kids workshops, traditional games.
-

7. Did you know…
The traditional palm-hat ("sombrero majorero") sold at the fair takes around 6 hours to weave by hand. Each artisan signs their pieces with a small burnt mark on the inside band — a tradition that goes back to the 19th century when fishermen exchanged hats with farmers as a sign of trust between coast and inland villages.
